Lurch is the towering butler with a morose presence. Though not a particularly good butler, he is very loyal. He is especially fond of the children and will go the extra mile to protect them from good influences. He never drinks and enjoys playing the piano.

At six-feet, nine-inches tall, John DeSantis won the role of Lurch, in part, because of his height. A relative newcomer to the acting sphere, his other work includes a principal role in the Disney film The Thirteenth Warrior, in which he played a Viking warrior. He has also appeared in the television series Police Academy.

DeSantis served for two years in the Canadian army and enjoys water polo, rugby, tennis and horseback riding.
