The daughter of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, Carolyn is a vivacious young lady, seemingly on a quest to fill the darkened hallways of Collinwood with a light so tragically denied by her mother. At once filled with the air of teenage rebellion and a desire to enjoy life, in spite of its disappointments, she is both an inspiration and source of worry for her mother. Capable of stubborn and selfish acts, it is here that Carolyn's true character is revealed, that of an emotional, sensitive young woman more easily hurt than she might otherwise suggest.

Nancy Barrett was born on 5 October 1943, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She showed an early affinity for acting and writing, producing her own plays in her garden as a 10-year-old girl alongside her sister. Following High School, she attended the Baylor University in Texas, eventually transferring to UCLA for her final year.

She continued to work on the stage, including roles on Broadway in Dr Faustus and Pickwick, before landing the role of Carolyn on Dark Shadows. During the show's run, she appeared in the plays The Star-Spangled Girl and The Physicists.

In 1967, Nancy married her Dark Shadows co-star David Ford (Sam Evans), with whom she performed regional theatre, but the couple divorced two years later. Her third husband was noted psychiatrist Harold Kaplan, whom she married in the 1970s and remained with until his death in 1997.

Following Dark Shadows, Nancy appeared in a number of television shows, including Somerset, The Doctors, Ryan's Hope, One Life to Live, The Adams Chronicles and the 1986 film Belizaire the Cajun. She also appeared in a commercial for Gillette Spoiler razors.

Her theatre credits include roles in The Fantasticks, Telemachus Clay, Take Her She's Mine, Quadrille, Three in Time, A Gathering of Nettles, The Diary of Anne Frank, Babes in Arms and Little Mary Sunshine.

In recent years, Nancy has performed her cabaret show at hospitals, clubs and the Dark Shadows Festival fan conventions. In 1999, she performed in a ballet for the first time in The Nutcracker, and is working on a music CD.

In 2003, Nancy reprised Carolyn Stoddard in the Return to Collinwood reunion audio play. Carolyn Stoddard was now mistress of Collinwood, married to lawyer Ned Stuart.
