Barnabas remains in his aged state. Carolyn visits the Old House and wanders into the basement, where she encounters Barnabas, who attacks her to restore his appearance.

Carolyn is confused by Victoria's sudden antipathy towards Barnabas and questions Julia about the girl's sudden lapses in memory. Carolyn tells Barnabas that she is convinced that Julia is working against him.

Julia tells Carolyn to stop following her. Julia hypnotises Victoria again and takes her to the Old House, showing her the sleeping Barnabas and warning her of his plan to make her one of the living dead.

Carolyn begs Barnabas to spare Julia, but he is adamant and demands that she retrieves Julia's notes. Meanwhile, the residents of Collinwood and Julia become concerned by Carolyn's change of personality.

In a desperate attempt to prevent Barnabas from obtaining the notebook, Julia entrusts it with Tony Peterson, a local lawyer pursuing a claim against a Collins family employee.

Barnabas issues Carolyn with instructions to retrieve Julia's notebook. Meanwhile, he uses an ancient incantation to vengefully make the ghost of Woodard appear to a guilt-stricken Julia.

Carolyn gains Tony's affections as part of Barnabas' plan. Julia is terrified to be confronted by Woodard's ghost, while Barnabas contrives to convince her that it is a result of her conscience.

The visitor turns out to be Barnabas, feigning concern at Julia's welfare. Carolyn makes moves to obtain Tony's keys. Later at his office, Carolyn gains access to the safe, but is discovered by Tony.

Carolyn claims that the notebook is part of a blackmail attempt by Julia, but is unable to take it. Julia confides in Barnabas that she has seen Sarah. As he accuses her of lying, the girl appears before them.

Sarah tells Barnabas that he must be good and refuses to reappear to him until he does so. Meanwhile, Victoria begins to face the loss of Burke and Sarah warns David of a new danger.
