Production
Notes
- The
show recorded a 7.5 Nielsen rating for its third year, with
a 28.8 share across 4.2m daily homes. This figure translated
to over 16m weekly viewers.
- Anthony
George left the show following Barnabas' duel with Jeremiah.
For the character's deathbed scenes Timothy Gordon filled
in, his face covered
by bandages. He also played the character as a ghost with
a voice provided
by
Addison Powell. Powell would return in the present
day as Dr. Eric Lang. Due
to illness, Nancy Barrett missed the taping of episode
578, with Diana Walker filling in as Carolyn. When
Chris Jennings changed into a werewolf, Alex Stevens
played the role, despite being several inches shorter!
- Though
still under contract, Alexandra Moltke became pregnant
and left the show in episode 627. Betsy Durkin debuted
three episodes later in the role. The recasting was not
judged a success and Victoria was hastily abandoned after
just 10 more appearances. Victoria wouldn't receive a proper
leaving story until several months later, at the beginning
of 1969.
- Series
creator Dan Curtis made his directorial debut on
episode 457.
- Grayson
Hall dispenses with Julia Hoffman's hairpiece from episode
462 onwards. Dan Curtis had previously baulked at Grayson's
own "frivilous" cropped hairstyle for the character,
until receiving some sage fashion advice from his wife!
- Robert
Cobert created
a new melody for Josette's music box, first heard during
the 1795 story. Around the time the show returned to the
present day, its music library was significantly expanded
with compositions from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll
and Mr Hyde, a television special Cobert had scored
for Dan Curtis. An early version of Quentin's Theme
was first heard in the same production.
- May
1968 saw Jonathan Frid (Barnabas) make a week of
personal appearances, travelling to ten cities. While in
South Carolina he was mobbed by 3,000 fans, with three police
cars needed to restore order. The tour's peak was the 12,000
strong crowds seen in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
- Episodes
437 and 509 are lost on their colour videotapes and survive
as black and white kinescope film copies.
