MPI Home Video's The Best of Dark Shadows is a compilation of 20 classic scenes selected from the 1,225 episodes of the original series.

Frequently the content highlights the creative camera work of directors Henry Kaplan, Lela Swift, and John Sedwick, with some sparkling writing from writers Joe Caldwell, Sam Hall, Malcolm Marmorstein, Gordon Russell, Ron Sproat and Violet Wells.

Featured actors include Joan Bennett, Jonathan Frid, Kate Jackson, Lara Parker, Kathryn Leigh Scott and David Selby. However, it is Parker and Frid who dominate the compilation, from the pivitol scene of Angelique bestowing the vampire curse on Barnabas to the rousing reversal of power as its power is felt.

Most of the major storylines from the show, are sampled along the way, though with a couple of notable omissions, including the Phoenix tale and 1841 Parallel Time. Also missing from a somewhat subjective selection are the characters brought to life by performers Thayer David and Clarice Blackburn along, perhaps, with a more focused look at the work of Grayson Hall.

The compilation culminates with a music video titled I, Barnabas, from the original Dark Shadows album, which was created by Alan Matlick, an engineer, at WNYC-TV in New York and aired a few times on the station following the reruns of the series in 1988. It features a suite of Robert Cobert's haunting music, with dramatic narration by Jonathan Frid, to a selection of clips of the character in action.

Short but sweet, this glowing glimpse of classic Dark Shadows certainly does the job of sparking off many special memories for its fans.
